Match your EOBs against what you actually paid to find overpayments
Keep a simple log of medical payments, then have AI compare it with your EOBs (explanation-of-benefits statements your insurer sends after care) to find prepayments and copays you shouldn't have paid.
1. Copy this prompt
Paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok (the free versions work), then replace the [highlighted brackets] with your details. Leave out account numbers and SSNs.
Here is my spreadsheet of medical payments this year and the matching EOB 'patient responsibility' amounts, with personal details removed: [PASTE TABLE]. My deductible is $[DEDUCTIBLE] and my out-of-pocket maximum is $[OOP MAX]. 1) Flag every visit where I paid more than the EOB says I owe and total the difference by provider. 2) Check whether my total payments exceed my out-of-pocket maximum. 3) Explain any discrepancies in plain English (for example, a prepayment estimated before my deductible was met). 4) Draft a short refund request to each provider with a credit balance.

What to expect, and what to do if they say no
What happened when people tried it
Reported ChatGPT confirmed a $1,512 overpayment that she had spotted in her records; at the time of writing she was still waiting for the refund.
What the AI did: A CNET writer compiled 14 itemized bills, EOBs and a spreadsheet of 87 claims, redacted them, and asked ChatGPT to audit them. It didn't find new errors on its own, but when she asked about a specific mismatch it explained that a prepayment for a second eye surgery had been estimated before her deductible was met.

Why this works
The problem: Providers often collect estimates upfront. When the claim is processed, your real share can be lower, and refunds don't always arrive on their own.
How AI helps: AI can reconcile a spreadsheet of payments against EOB 'patient responsibility' amounts and your out-of-pocket maximum, and explain discrepancies.

What do these labels mean?
- Free No cost at all.
- Free option available Paid upgrades exist, but the free version works for this.
- Costs money You pay a set price or subscription.
- Takes a cut of savings Charges a percentage of what it saves you.
- Time · Difficulty Our estimates for a typical first try, not guarantees.

Watch out for
- AI is only as accurate as the data you give it. The CNET writer found the overpayment through her own records; ChatGPT helped explain why.
- Some insurer reps give wrong answers; check what your plan contract actually says.
- Redact identifiers before uploading.
